Resetting and Testing GFCI Outlets

If your power suddenly goes out in the kitchen or bathroom, you may just need to hit “RESET” on your GFCI outlet. Let’s learn more about the special outlets in your bathrooms and kitchen with the little buttons.

What Is a GFCI Outlet?

A GFCI outlet is a specialized electrical outlet that uses Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter technology. It resembles a standard outlet but has a “TEST” and a “RESET” button between the two plug receptacles.

GFCI outlets are self-contained; the protection mechanism is built into the outlet itself. One GFCI outlet can protect other standard outlets downstream on the same circuit. For example, all the outlets in your kitchen are usually safeguarded by one GFCI. If none of your outlets work in the kitchen, you may just need to press the “RESET” button.

The job of a GFCI outlet is to monitor the electrical current and quickly cut power if a ground fault is detected. A ground fault is when electricity veers from its path, such as through a person or an object, and flows to the ground.

Where Should GFCI Outlets Be Installed?

The purpose of a GFCI outlet is to protect people from electric shock, which is most likely to occur in areas where water might come into contact with electricity. Most homes and buildings are required to have GFCI outlets installed in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors since these locations can be damp.

How Does a GFCI Outlet Work?

The GFCI constantly monitors and compares the current flowing into the circuit (hot wire) with the current returning from the circuit (neutral wire). If working correctly, the currents are equal. If a difference of about five milliamps is detected, the GFCI will trip, cutting off power to the circuit.

After tripping, the GFCI can be reset manually by pressing the “RESET” button to restore power once the fault is addressed. If power is not restored after pressing the “RESET” button, the GFCI must be replaced.

Testing a GFCI

To check that a GFCI is working properly, plug in a small item, such as a nightlight, and press the “TEST” button. If the light turns off, it works properly, and you can press the “RESET” button. If the light does not turn off, the GFCI will not work correctly. Contact one of our licensed electricians if you need help.
